Chairlift - Bruises, the iPod nano commercial song; Metric - Help, I'm Alive; Love Is All - Wishing Well; Hello Seahorse! - Won't Say Anything (MP3s)
I can't make up for months of blogger's block with one post, but here's a start... Chairlift - BruisesThis is the catchy song from that iPod nano commercial. The album is decent, but "Bruises" and "Evident Utensil" are clearly the standouts. In other good news: New Metric: Metric - Help, I'm Alive!Scroll down. Hopefully the sendspace link is still active. Love Is All - Wishing WellAnother song I can't get enough of. Sounds like the Pogues meets the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on speed. Apparently, Swedes can do punk as well as they do pop. 'A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night' is one of my favorite albums of the year. Hello Seahorse! - Won't Say AnythingThis feel-good tune reminds me of summer, a season that comes and goes too soon in Chicago, if you ask me. This up and coming band hails from Mexico City and their forthcoming album is out this month: 'Hoy a Las Ocho'.Labels: indie rock, mp3, pop

O M G
I guess the late Tupac was wrong. A lot has changed since then. Although I didn't get a ticket for the main Grant Park event, I enjoyed the moment just the same. Tens of thousands gathered watching on a Jumbotron nearby, sharing in an historic moment that the world has been awaiting for eight long years. Perhaps we can (yes we can) overcome the politics of fear and divisiveness and the inept policies of an ineffective administration. Remember The Onion's prescient pre-Bush article? One of their recent articles has a nice graphic summarizing how f*cked the last eight years were.We certainly face daunting times ahead. But if Obama is half as good a leader as he is an orator, then I am optimistic for our great nation. Here's a selection of election-related Onion articles: Nation Finally Sh*tty Enough To Make Social Progress"Carrying a majority of the popular vote, Obama did especially well among women and young voters, who polls showed were particularly sensitive to the current climate of everything being f*cked." The Onion predicts Joe the Plumber in 1993Proving that truth is stranger than parody. Also, don't miss the article at the bottom of the page: Homeless Catch On To 'Grunge' Trend. Voting Machines Elect One Of Their Own As President Diebold Accidentally Leaks Results Of 2008 Election EarlySorry, McCain. Even the few hundred thousand Diebold swing votes couldn't help you in the battleground states. I mean, you even lost Indiana. Indiana! Struggling Lower-Class Still Unsure How Best To F*ck Selves With Vote Now that he has won, we can focus on more important tasks at hand, including key issues that eluded out current commander-in-chief, such as: How Can We Make The War In Iraq More Eco-Friendly?"Panelists discuss ways to wage a greener war in Iraq, such as driving biodegradable tanks and shocking detainees' testicles with wind power." In case you were wondering who's got better moves...dance moves, that is: John McCain vs Barack Obama dance-offNeko Case on spending Election Night away from home and Canadian excitementLabels: humor, video

My Bloody Valentine
My Bloody Ears! From the light, ethereal intro of "I Only Said" to "When You Sleep" all the way to the seizure-inducing, tympanic membrane-shattering 30 minute "You Made Me Realize" finale, My Bloody Valentine completely rocked the Aragon Ballroom and uptown Chicago, likely causing some sensorineural hearing loss among those in the mesmerized crowd who opted not to use earplugs. But hell, if you're going to lose your hearing, you might as well lose it to MBV, one of the few bands on my short list of "Bands You Must See Before You Die". They did nothing to shed their reputation of being shy and mysterious, not even greeting or acknowledging the audience until close to the end of the show. However, they let their music do the talking. Favorites from 'Loveless' included an uber-fuzzy "Come In Alone", personal fave "When You Sleep", and the jangly loudness of "Soon". It's too bad they didn't do the crowd favorite "Sometimes" or another fave of mine, the JAMC-esque "Drive It All Over Me". Nothing could prepare me for the earth-shattering finale though. It felt like someone stuck a lit M80 in each of my ears. No videos up yet, but there were plenty of people taking them so check YouTube soon. Unfortunately, my camera conveniently ran out of batteries.

Savoir Adore - We Talk Like Machines (MP3)
Savoir AdoreIf you're a fan of Broken Social Scene or Los Campesinos!, you owe it to yourself to check out Savoir Adore. With labelmates MGMT, they're yet another Brooklyn band hoping to energize the scene. "We Talk Like Machines" sounds like a more melodic and shoegazy/dream pop version of Broken Social Scene's "Looks Just Like The Sun". Savoir Adore - We Talk Like MachinesThe other three of their newly mastered tracks are available for free to download on Cantora Records.Labels: indie rock, mp3, pop

Natasha Bedingfield vs. Chicane - Bruised Water (MP3)
Natasha Bedingfield vs. Chicane - Bruised Water (MP3 removed by request)Pop (Natasha Bedingfield's "I Bruise Easily") meets classic Balearic house (Chicane's "Saltwater"). Easily the best mash-up of the year. Promo just released in the UK on Modena, Chicane's new independent label.Labels: electronic, mp3, pop

Top 50 TV Shows of All Time, Alibi Tom - Fire (MP3), Soundamus, Hot Chip - One Pure Thought (video)
Empire: Top 50 Greatest TV Shows Of All TimeWorst...top 50 list...ever.My Top 20 in no particular order would be: Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, Futurama, Law and Order (not on their f*ckin' list!), The Simpsons, Scrubs, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Seinfeld, The Sopranos, Chappelle's Show, Sex and the City, The Office, The Wire, 24, South Park, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Cosby Show (also not on their list!), The X-Files, and Cheers (also not on their list!). Other glaring omissions: I Love Lucy, M*A*S*H, All in the Family, The Tonight Show, Sesame Street, Hill Street Blues, game shows... Alibi Tom - FireAlibi Tom are yet another catchy Swedish pop band. They sound a bit like Interpol meets Peter Bjorn and John and Spoon, which isn't a bad thing.SoundamusAttention Last.fm users: Track new and upcoming music releases from your favorite artists with Soundamus via RSS. Hot Chip - One Pure Thought (video)Every video released from their latest LP has been a winner.Labels: electronic, humor, indie rock, mp3, video

Annie - I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me (video), Mystery Jets (videos), The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name (videos), more
Annie - I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me (video)Annie is back and looking amazing in her new vid, "I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me", the first single off her forthcoming LP, tentatively titled 'Don't Stop', due out in late summer. Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down (video)OMG, what a hilarious 80s flashback video. Nice Flock Of Seagulls hair! Mystery Jets - Young Love (video)I don't think I've posted this awesome vid yet. I love how Mystery Jets sprinkle in references to their influences, like Television in "Two Doors Down" and Blondie in "Young Love". Contributor Laura Marling even looks a bit like a young Debbie Harry. The Ting Tings - Thats Not My Name (video 1) | (video 2)As with "Great DJ", the Ting Tings have two videos for their song "That's Not My Name". Can't wait for the album. The Long Blondes - Guilt (video)Kate looks delicious in that outfit and do. Sia - The Girl You Lost To Cocaine (video)This video is kinda bizarre. Sia is so goofy.Labels: electronic, indie rock, pop, video

Coldplay - Violet Hill (MP3), CSS - Rat Is Dead (Rage)(MP3), The Radio Dept. - Freddie and the Trojan Horse (MP3), more
Coldplay - Violet Hill (click and sign up to download)"If you love me, won't you let me know?"The first single from their forthcoming LP, 'Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends', is available on their website. Well, I suppose I've ignored Coldplay since 'X&Y' (or actually since their 2nd LP), but this song is reason to pay attention again. The expansive guitar and exaggerated dynamics kinda reminded me of Doves, mixed in with familiar Coldplay elements like Chris Martin's piano and trademark falsetto. (Speaking of which, when the hell are Doves coming out with a new album? Hopefully, this year.) CSS - Rat Is Dead (Rage) (MP3)Hooray for new CSS! It's more alt rock/punk than their previous tunes, sharing more in common with Veruca Salt, Belly, or the Breeders than their dance rock counterparts. The Radio Dept. - Freddie and the Trojan Horse (MP3) | mirrorWith all the great music coming out of Sweden, The Radio Dept. still holds its place as my favorite Swedish band/artist, with The Knife and Jens Lekman as close runners-up (not to leave out Robyn, Shout Out Louds, Peter Bjorn and John, Jose Gonzalez, The Cardigans, The Sounds, The Hives, and ABBA). This is the title track off their forthcoming LP, 'Freddie and the Trojan Horse', a dreamy and contemplative blend of pop, synth rock, and psychedelia. Evil Dead - The MusicalWow, I really want to see this. Too bad it's only playing in Toronto. Come to Chicago (or at least to Broadway)! Jimi Hendrix Sex TapeAdd this to the list of things I never want to see.Roger Ebert's JournalI don't always agree with his reviews. But it'll be interesting to read his daily ramblings on his new blog.Labels: electronic, indie rock, mp3, video

Bento lunches as album covers, My Brightest Diamond (MP3), Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone (video)
Bento box lunches decorated as album artForget Food Network. These are the coolest culinary creations you'll see all year. Link above goes to a Japanese blog dedicated to these bento box creations. Translation of some of these in the ensuing link: [via] My Brightest Diamond - Inside A BoyShara Worden has a wonderful voice. She's been compared to Kate Bush, which is only a bit of a stretch. However, if this song is any indication, things on 'A Thousand Shark's Teeth' (the follow-up to her eclectic debut LP) will pick up where they left off. Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone (video)Old people popping (or trying to pop) is funny. Just don't pop that joint outta place! Coachella by the NumbersLA weekly breaks down the numbers at Coachella, like gender of lead singers, ethnicity, indies vs. majors, etc.Labels: electronic, humor, indie rock, mp3, pop, video
