Hanging out with Broken Social Scene and listening to Mogwai has honed the hushed gloom offered by this Canadian indie-dream-pop group. But a lot of the deft moves here are clearly self-invented, most notably the mixing of Tahiti 80-like bouncy kit beats with spacious post-rock soundscapes.

From the sounds of No Matter What, first single off new disc Paper Trail, the slick T.I. has the gruff T.I.P. on the ropes, but he hasn't quite knocked him out. This tension--full-bodied pop-rap tugged at by hard rhymes--keeps the artist's stuff rich and highly listenable.
Jennifer Hudson
Maybe we should stop being surprised by Jennifer Hudson. The breakout star of "Dreamgirls" dazzles again on debut LP Spotlight. The sweet vocals we saw coming, but the cool R&B sense and the smart use of beats are a fine twist. Hudson is the real deal.
Ludacris
OutKast may have patented the phrase, but it's Luda that's making the "Dirty" South so fresh and so clean. On new full-length Theater Of The Mind, the MC brings a professional's precision to hard street flows, a mix that, combined with hard bass beats, feels compelling and urgent.
